According to AFP, the country’s Central Municipal Council is to discuss the proposal on December 1. The move is expected to restrict entrance to Qatar’s biggest retail complexes to families only on one day each weekend.

“Qatar is a family-based society and it is right that families have a day especially for them,” CMC member Nasser Bin Ibrahim Al-Mohannadi said. “Malls are not just for shopping but also for entertainment and family gatherings.”

Qatar’s shopping malls are home to some of the Middle East’s largest family entertainment centre brands.

Development continues on the mammoth Mall of Qatar project, meanwhile, which is to house a 16,000sq.m family entertainment area boasting an Angry Birds Activity Park, Juniverse edutainment experience and a ride-based Virtuocity area for teens and adults.

The new complex is due to open in 2016.
