On Monday, December 17, the New Jersey state assembly approved proposals which would enable Atlantic City casinos to take online bets from gamblers in other states – providing it is consistent with federal law to do so.

The bill will now go before the state senate for consideration, ahead of final approval from governor Chris Christie.

The state assembly voted in favour of the proposal by a 48-24-4 margin, backing a bill that, if it becomes law, would make New Jersey the fourth state to legalise online gaming, behind the District of Columbia (since repealed), Nevada and Delaware.

Senator Ray Lesniak said earlier this month that the proposals would be put to a senate vote on December 20 and be signed into law by the governor by the end of 2012, but it is now unclear whether this will happen before year end.
