Iwata, who revived Nintendo’s fortune with the launch of the Wii console a decade ago, died on Saturday from a bile duct tumour.

While Nintendo searches for a new leader, board directors Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda will jointly run the company in the interim.

Iwata, who joined Nintendo in 2000, was selected to lead the company by predecessor Hiroshi Yamauchi in 2002. He became only the fourth president of Nintendo in its more than 100-year history and the first who was not a member of the founding Yamauchi family.

At a conference in 2005, Iwata told delegates: “On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer.”
