Hiroshi Yamauchi, the Japanese businessman credited with turningNintendo into a world-beating video games company, has died at the age of 85.

Yamauchi ran Nintendo for more than five decades, from 1949 to 2002, and remained its second-largest shareholder up until his death.

In a statement released today, a Nintendo spokesman said the firm was in mourning over the "loss of the former Nintendo president Mr Hiroshi Yamauchi, who sadly passed away this morning."
