The Gambling Commission is reportedly investigating a key aide of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak over a bet placed on the upcoming General Election.

The Guardian first reported on Wednesday that Conservatives candidate Craig Williams put a £100 bet on a July election three days before the PM revealed the July 4 date.

Williams, who the Guardian said placed a bet via Flutter Entertainment-owned Ladbrokes at odds of 5/1, admitted he “should have thought how it looks.”

He said on X, formerly Twitter: “I’ve been contacted by a journalist about Gambling Commission inquiries into one of my accounts and thought it best to be totally transparent.

“I put a flutter on the general election some weeks ago. This has resulted in some routine inquiries and I confirm I will fully cooperate with these.

“I don’t want it to be a distraction from the campaign, I should have thought how it looks.”

The Guardian said Ladbrokes flagged up the bet on one of its novelty markets  and referred it to the Gambling Commission, which has reportedly launched an inquiry.

Williams is standing in the election in the constituency of Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr.
