The Swedish government has proposed fresh funding for the Swedish gambling regulator to help it tackle the illegal market.

The government wants Spelinspektionen to be allocated an extra SEK10.8m (£778.1m) in the wider budget bill for 2024.

The government also expects the Gambling Authority’s funding to continue to increase up to SEK15.6m (£1.12m) in 2025 and SEK18.6m (£1.34m) in 2026.

However, Spelinspektionen must forge a closer working relationship with the Financial Supervisory Authority for the funding to work, the government added.

“There must be strong consumer protection in the gambling market. With this investment, Spelinspektionen can sharpen supervision,” said Niklas Wykman, Financial Markets minister.

“In addition, the cooperation with the Financial Supervisory Authority can open up new opportunities to block payment mediation to and from illegal actors, something that can play an important role in the work to combat criminal activity.”

Sports minister Jakob Forssmed added: “Fixed sports competitions and other forms of match-fixing are against the fundamental values of sport and are a serious threat to the future of sport.

“Reinforcement of the Spelinspektionen's work contributes to protecting Swedish sports from being undermined by organised crime.”
