Castilla y Leon is to become the first Spanish region to regulate online gambling when, as expected, it approves later this year or early next year a new law to control gambling on the internet, television and telephone.
The regional government is preparing a draft law at the moment in which there are two key objectives – to ensure the protection of users and companies and to stipulate that operators must be headquartered in the region.
The user will be protected via measures such as minimum age for participation and the inclusion of health warnings and limits on playing hours. At the moment, only Malta and the UK in Europe have regulations controlling remote gambling.
