The Spanish enclave of Ceuta, in North Africa, is trying to move in on the disaffected online gambling companies in the British enclave of Gibraltar.
Together with the other Spanish North African territory, Melilla, Ceuta is trying to establish itself as an igaming hub to tempt the Gibraltar-based online gambling companies to abandon the rock and take up opportunities in Spanish-held territories.
The problems for Gibraltar have been caused by the Brexit situation in the UK, creating uncertainty about the UK overseas territory. Already the Spanish government has announced a10 per cent tax rate for online gambling companies basing their operations in Ceuta and Melilla, matching the Gibraltar rates. And land-based operators with type B and C gaming machines, bingo and table games will also enjoy a 10 per cent rate - half the current level.
