The Middle Eastern state of Israel is in the process of trying to outlaw online gaming.
According to a new bill that passed its first reading in the Israeli Government or Knesset last week, websites relating to gambling, pornography and violence will be automatically blocked by internet service providers in the state.
The bill was proposed by MK Amnon Cohen of the Shas political party, which represents the ultra-orthodox Sephardi and Mizrahi Judaism communities. It received 46 votes in favour and 20 against.
"This is a black day for the internet community in Israel," said Rimon Levy, president of the Israeli Internet Association. "The law will not protect even one child and will force a sheriff on citizens - the Communications Ministry."
If the law is passed, internet providers would have 60 days to remove the sites or face a hefty fine.
