Internet cafes play an integral role in China's online game market, a new report has claimed.

Research and Markets’ China’s Internet Cafes Study 2008 found that although gamers in large cities such as Beijing and Shanghai often have home PCs, many still visit cafes for online gaming in order to socialise and compete with others.

The report found that in more rural areas and smaller cities, internet cafes are relied on for internet access and play online games.

"As video game publishers look to break into and successfully compete in the burgeoning Chinese market, it is critical that they understand underlying consumer behaviours and how internet cafes are a critical component of China’s online game market," commented Lisa Hanson, managing partner of Niko Partners.
