Grand Theft Auto IV has made online gaming history, according to a report released by internet service provider PlusNet.

Soon after the game’s release, more than one third of PlusNet’s customers - a total of 90,000 users - were gaming online at the same time, the company said.

PlusNet’s products director, Neil Armstrong, said: "The demand to play GTA IV online has been absolutely phenomenal.

"Our broadband usage figures have gone through the roof as customers battle it out on the streets of Liberty City.

"GTA IV has captured the imagination of gamers in a way not previously seen. We believe that if this has happened to us then it will be a similar story for other ISPs."
