The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the possibility that individuals are breaking US online gaming laws through Facebook, the popular social networking site.

Ahead of the upcoming ‘March Madness’ basketball tournament, which involves the NCAA’s top 64 men’s basketball teams, people have been operating sports betting pools on Facebook - something that is deemed illegal following the signing of the UIGEA in September 2006.

According to an article in the Chicago Tribune, people who host March Madness online pools and collect fees could face criminal charges and jail, if found guilty of operating an illegal online gambling operation.

"There could be a violation if there’s a payout and if the operators take a cut," FBI spokesman Ross Rice told the newspaper.
