The European Commission does not see any real possibility that its member states will, in the near future, agree on common rules regulating online gambling, according to a report in The Times of Malta newspaper.
Charlie McCreevy, the internal market commissioner, was quoted as stating that although he wishes for a consensus over the issue of online gambling, he believes this will not come any time soon.
"The first starting point would be to get some form of consensus among the 25 member states," he told The Times. "We can start off by getting consensus in this big Parliament, but I do not think we will. I am sure we will not get it at the Council of Ministers. Not a chance."
