A hacker has hit four New Jersey internet gambling sites in a cyber attack, threatening more attacks unless a bitcoin ransom is paid.
Four sites, which have not been identified, went down for half an hour as a result of the attack. According to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, the attack was a distributed denial of service, in which websites are flooded with information that renders them inoperative.
In a statement the state’s gaming enforcement director, David Rebuck, said: “The attack was followed by the threat of a more powerful and sustained attack to be initiated 24 hours later unless a bitcoin ransom [is] paid.”
No player money was stolen and no personal information was revealed in the incident.
