THE indefinite suspension of global sports may appear a rather insignificant backdrop to the wider reaching crisis the world finds itself in, but for millions it provides paid work, and for billions more, entertainment.

Sport is itself a huge economy and I doubt any could have foreseen its almost total paralysis. We are truly living through a period of great change and although there are parallels to wartime, this is in many ways totally unique in our lifetimes. The disease isn’t virulent enough to trigger a sixth mass extinction, but in our increasingly interconnected world the economic damage could set mankind’s technological ambitions back any number of years.
