Many Irish internet users are unable to make the most of online gaming services due to slower than advertised broadband speeds, a new report by Epitiro has revealed.
The Broadband Communications Authority’s Ireland Internet Performance Index 2008 found on average mobile broadband consumers achieve only 64 per cent of advertised speed.
Ping times - the time taken for data to be sent, replied to and received - for all of the country’s ISPs were slower than the maximum recommended for online gaming. Mobile broadband was also found to have excessively slow ping times.
“The average ping time for Ireland is 194 milliseconds, which is well above the maximum acceptable time of 100 milliseconds that avid gamers use as a ceiling,” Epitiro said.
“None of Ireland’s ISPs showed ping times that would be considered acceptable by competitive internet game players.”
