Brazil’s Senate Plenary has voted to approve regulation of sports betting, but igaming legislation was removed from the bill in one of three amendments.

As reported by Senado Noticias, Senator Carlos Portinho’s amendment to exclude online casino from the bill received 37 votes for and 27 against.

What’s more, the installation of sports betting terminals and the ability for operators to offer virtual sports offerings did not form part of the amended bill, which has gone back to the Chamber of Deputies for further analysis.

However, a proposed amendment that would have prohibited advertising in sports arenas and sponsorship or ambassadorial deals for athletes was removed.

There remains concern over whether Brazil can get the sports betting regulations signed off before the end of 2023.

The Chamber of Deputies enters its latest recess on December 23, which lasts until February 2.
