A recent report by the Australian Productivity Commission has outlined the possibility of legalising online gambling in Australia.
Although wagering on races and sports betting is not restricted, the provision of online gambling to Australian residents is prohibited by the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.
The report found that although the restriction has not been deemed as a failure, Australian consumers can and are continuing to access online gaming through international sites. It also outlined the benefits of allowing Australian companies to provide egaming services to its residents rather than consumers using services provided by offshore companies. The benefits included more protection for Australian players, familiarity, better communication and tax revenue collected by Australian sites rather than foreign governments.
The Commission concluded by stating that a properly regulated online gaming industry would deliver a net benefit to the Australian community.
