The phone will be available in both 8GB and 16GB versions from UK mobile phone operator 02, and existing iPhone customers will be able to upgrade to the new handset regardless of where they are in their contract. They will, however, have to commit to another 18 months.

Rival mobile phone operator Orange will release the iPhone in Austria, Portugal and Switzerland and France.

T-Mobile will also release the phone in Austria, Portugal and Switzerland but will also release the phone in Germany, the Netherlands, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia later in the year.

Apple also announced the forthcoming launch of the iPhone 2.0 software that will power the device effectively turning it from a mobile phone into a pocket computer.

Users will be able to legitimately buy and download official widgets to customise their experience.
