Prime minister Edi Rama said last week that the government is to draft legislation to block gambling on websites based abroad. It is estimated that Albanians currently spend more than €500m a year on such gaming sites.

Since Rama swept to victory in the June election, government officials have assessed around 1,300 casinos and betting shops in the country. A number have been closed down having been found to be operating illegally or on grounds of tax evasion.
