The growth of online gaming requires security measures in the sector to be more stringent than ever. Jenni Shuttleworth talks to several companies to find out more.

While no online sector can be immune from the attention of criminals, gambling operators have been considered a fairly high-risk merchant category, often being targeted by fraudulent users.
This is mainly down to the opportunity to monetise the theft of payment credentials remotely, depositing with one method and withdrawing through another. “It’s a whole lot easier for a criminal to target online businesses from the comfort of their armchair than it is to put a pair of tights over their head and march into the nearest bank or jewellery store,” said David Pope, marketing director at Experian Decision Analytics. “Having said that, the i-gaming industry has always been ahead of the curve. From the early days, i-gaming operators have embraced ID verification technology to verify customer name, address, date of birth and other customer data as part of their commitment on social responsibility to prevent underage gaming,” added Pope.
The industry is susceptible for a number of reasons according to Shemer Katz, vice president of product and marketing at SafeCharge: “First of all, in any business where an end user can eventually cash out actual money there is an element of riskiness and an anti-money laundry attractiveness.
