For many years it was the trendy upstart, the challenger to the giants of the FEC world, but has the time finally come for virtual reality to come of age? With a raft of innovative new products hitting the market and new technology blurring the lines between game and experience, is 2023 the year that VR becomes an essential part of any entertainment location’s offering?

There have been numerous false starts and false dawns in the history of VR. The 70s and 80s saw the technology explored for military and artistic purposes, before Nintendo harnessed the power of VR for entertainment in the 90s with its Virtual Boy console. It was a rare misstep from the Japanese giants, who quickly moved on from the concept. Now, almost three decades on, there is a richer and more diverse ecosystem around virtual, augmented and mixed reality, with a number of manufacturers and distributors leading the way when it comes to immersive experiences.
