The plan to bring a giant Universal Studios theme park to the UK has been given government backing, it was announced overnight.

The multi-billion investment in a giant venue just outside of Bedford has been formally agreed between the government, Universal and the local Bedford Council.
It will bring an estimated £50bn boost for the country’s economy and create 28,000 jobs across the creative, hospitality and construction industries.
The new park will be open in 2031 and will form part of a new entertainment resort that the government said would include "immersive storytelling, rides, attractions and hospitality."
In tandem with the government’s Plan for Change, Universal will work with local colleges and universities to train the next generation of its hospitality workforce, through apprenticeships and internships.
Universal expects that the new park will draw 8.5 million visitors in its first year.
Prime Minister Kier Starmer said: “Today we closed the deal on a multi-billion-pound investment that will see Bedford home to one of the biggest entertainment parks in Europe, firmly putting the county on the global stage.
“This is our Plan for Change in action, combining local and national growth with creating around 28,000 new jobs across sectors such as construction, AI and tourism.
“It is not just about numbers; it’s about securing real opportunities for people in our country. Together, we are building a brighter future for the UK, getting people into work and ensuring our economy remains strong and competitive.”
The entire park area covers 476 acres of land, bought by Universal Destinations & Experiences over two years ago.
