The row over the future of the shuttered Southport Pier in the UK continues.

Local councillor John Pugh has now gone on record as suggesting that the structure is not as unsound as it is thought and he insists that had the pier been privately owned it would still be in operation.

The Sefton Council report on the structure said that it had deteriorated and was unsafe, causing the council to close it over two years ago.

Now the piers trade association, the National Piers Society, has reported on a private inspection by one of its own people that noted steel declamination, bracing failures and rotten timber beam ends. “The pier cannot be reopened to the public in its prtesent state.”

The council has made one approach for lottery funding to help refurbish the pier, only to be rebuffed.
