Video games and equipment in New Mexico, US, could be subject to a one per cent tax in a bid to raise funds and fight childhood obesity in the state.
Democratic lawyer Gail Chasey claims her ‘Leave No Child Inside’ proposal would raise US$4m annually, which could then be used to promote a healthier lifestyle and provide children with outdoor learning experiences.
It has been said that the items being taxed would, however have to be carefully chosen.
According to recent studies in the state, one quarter of New Mexico’s children are either obese or overweight.
