Although pinball holds a special place in people’s hearts today, it went through legislative hell to get there. Ian Donegan explores pinball’s arduous odyssey.

IN the last 10 years, the number of members of the International Flipper Pinball Association has gone from 500 to over 80,000. Everyone has the right to play the game without having to register first, but this does illustrate how evangelical people have become about the amusement in the last decade.
Pinball never really left the scene but it has been enjoying a real vogue in recent years. There are now more than 3,500 events and leagues held around the world annually with something in the range of US$2.5m in prize money being awarded to winners.
