The attraction, which went into receivership owing millions last year, has been acquired in a 115-year deal with Brighton Council by businesswoman Sarah Willingham.

It was reopened on Saturday with a £5 admission charge for people who could prove a local address - compared with an £18-20 charge under its former ownership.

Willingham’s company, Nightcap, opened the viewing platform plus the gift shop and cafe and promised much more to come, including a bar in the summer.

The tower is 531ft high with panoramic views across the city, surrounding countryside and the sea. When it went into liquidation it had debts of around £51m.
