One of the great veterans of British single-site operating, Gerry Koss, died on Monday.

Gerry, who was 93 on March 3, was taken ill on his way home from his office and did not recover.

It was in 1961 that Gerry’s father, Nat, founded Kossway with partner Fred Conway and it became a notable operator in the Home Counties and continues in that role today under managing director Paul Conway, Fred’s son.

Gerry continued to work throughout his later years, calling in at the office in Iver, Buckinghamshire, daily, and was a well-known character in UK operating circles at trade shows and industry events.

Terry Smith, who took over one of Gerry’s roles in the company, as asset manager, told us: “Gerry interviewed me for my first job on leaving school in 1981 and I have been with the company ever since. He was an incredible personality.”

Gerry, who lived close to the office at Datchet, close to Windsor, leaves a wife, Gaynor.

The funeral will be on Friday, April 4, at 12.30 at Slough Crematorium, Stoke Road, Slough SL2 5AX.
