It has come to InterGame's attention that the recent recall of millions of toys made in China could have a knock-on effect to sections of the coin-op industry.

Over the past few months the global toy industry has been struck by numerous recalls, after it was discovered that the paint used on some products contained high levels of lead.

Mattel was one of the worst affected companies with 1.5 million toys recalled - some containing nearly 200 times the US legal amount of lead.

As a result, some operators of redemption centres have had to take their own action.
Cory Haynes, vice president of Dave and Busters in the UK, told InterGame: “It is a very big concern for us as our customers expect us to provide safe prizes for our redemption area. I go to China for direct purchasing and we have had to put a plan in place for third party testing for lead paint.

“We have also contacted our domestic suppliers who purchase items on our behalf overseas and asked them to provide certification on lead free paint.”

However, in an attempt to calm fears over the safety of its products, Mattel’s chief executive, Robert Eckert, announced he will visit Asian sub-contractors to ensure they are implementing tough new safety guidelines.

And according to a report in the UK’s Telegraph newspaper, Disney has started randomly testing of a sample from around 65,000 product lines and retailer Toys ‘R’ Us has begun randomly taking products from store’s shelves to make sure they meet health and safety guidelines.
