An amusement park and zoo in Baghdad is on the road to recovery following years of insurgent attacks and looting after the US-led invasion began in 2003.

Only 35 of the original 700 animals remained after the invasion at the Baghdad Zoo and Entertainment Experience. Some died of starvation, some were stolen and some killed.

Renovations have now begun, however, with cages being repainted and new animals arriving, including ostriches, bears and a lion.

The amusement park, which will include amusements, rides, a concert theatre and a museum, is receiving millions of dollars of investment from US-based holding company for private equity firms, C3.

It is thought the project will cost US$500m.
