Fads come and go, but even in the face of global upheaval, pushers and cranes continue to prove their super-human endurance. Dan Snook considers them undeniably worthy.

THERE have been an array of similes and metaphors used over the last 12 months by those discussing the extraordinary circumstances we have all, at some point or another, been experiencing in both our personal and professional lives. But turning my attention toward the stalwarts of the amusement machine industry, the pusher and the crane, it provided a new angle to muse upon the Covid-19 impact (Covimpact?).

Many of us (some perhaps more than others) have seen the inexorable forces on our playfields nudge us towards new levels. Bunched together as new restrictions, curfews, rules and regulations send some into fresh, previously unexplored landscapes with only fortunate positioning, gravity and often luck sparing them from a similar journey. Some may also clang and clink into the payout tray, only to be redeposited and find a different route onto the arena of life that is 2020.
