Carissa Simons, senior media officer of ClubsNSW, tells InterGame about the important contribution clubs make to Australian life.

Clubs - making a contribution

THERE are approximately 1,500 not-for-profit registered clubs in New South Wales, Australia, spread across metropolitan and regional areas.

The club movement is stronger in NSW than in any other Australian state or territory. Approximately 50 per cent of club memberships are held in NSW and the state’s clubs produce more than 50 per cent of the industry’s total revenue.

How important is the gambling offering at a typical club? Is it the primary attraction for members?

On average, approximately 60 per cent of NSW club revenue comes from gaming and as a not-for-profit industry most clubs are reliant on gaming as an income stream. The club industry exists to support their local communities and we simply couldn’t do that without gaming revenue.

In the last year, how has the clubs market performed?

Club market gaming revenue grew at 2.6 per cent, which is roughly in line with consumer price index inflation. Growth was similar to the hotels market, which grew at 2.4 per cent. Which demographics do they attract? Are clubs working to engage with younger consumers?

Clubs provide something for everyone, which is why club membership in NSW has grown by almost one million over the last decade. Clubs are family-focused venues that provide entertainment and facilities for everyone from childcare, junior sport and live shows for kids to mums’ clubs, gyms and hairdressing salons for adults.
