One of the oldest forms of amusement, bowling continues to go from strength to strength thanks to innovation and support from other mediums, writes Lee Wild.

As covered many times in recent years in this publication, there is a real buzz from the industry about ‘competitive socialisation’ and how it is going to redefine how we look at location-based entertainment. Gone will supposedly be traditional arcades and in their place, a new swathe of amusement locations with high-end F&B where both children and adults can compete against each other in a game. A radical new idea? Not quite…

In many ways, bowling is the originator of the competitive socialisation concept. First appearing more than a century ago as a favoured pastime of many, bowling entertainment centres (BECs) offered a night out that included fun, food and drink long before the term “eatertainment” was ever coined.
