Swedish casino operator Svenska Spel says it wants to handle the closure of its final land-based property in “the best way possible.”

The company has begun union negotiations and discussions regarding the future of the approximately 240 staff at Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm.

Ola Enquist, CEO of Casino Cosmopol, said Svenska Spel will help employees transition to new jobs.

The company is awaiting a revised ownership directive for the casino from the government, which is on the agenda for Svenska Spel’s AGM on April 24.

After the meeting, Svenska Spel hopes to provide more details on when the casino will close.

Casino Cosmopol Stockholm remains open for now, but a government directive mandating the closure of land-based casinos will ensure it closes for good at the latest on January 1, 2026.

"We share the government's assessment and have been prepared for Parliament’s decision,” said Enquist.

“Still, it is emotionally challenging, as it marks the end of an era when the Stockholm casino eventually closes.

“Our current priority is to support our employees while keeping the casino open and continuing to take care of our guests.”

Svenska Spel has already closed its Casino Cosmopol properties in Sundsvall, Gothenburg and Malmö.
