Swedish gambling association SPER has welcomed a new proposal by the country’s government that only banks should be allowed to provide or mediate consumer credit.

The organisation said on its social media platforms that it hopes that the proposed change will “complement the benefits” of Sweden’s self-exclusion register Spelpaus “by making it more difficult for people to finance their gambling with payday loans.”

According to Sweden Herald, the government’s proposal is part of the government’s work to “counteract the over-indebtedness that exists in Sweden.”

The changes were initially proposed late last year and may come into effect in July.

“Sper has submitted more proposals for action for a better functioning gambling market,” it added.
