Thailand’s new prime minister appeared to reference the legalisation of casinos in her first speech in the role.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra said, as reported by the Associated Press, that her administration will look to generate revenue by legalising and taxing the “informal economy” and the “underground economy.”

Casinos in Thailand remain outlawed, but deputy finance minister Julapun Amornvivat announced last Thursday that 80 per cent of attendees at a public hearing supported the proposed Royal Siam Haven, the project outlined by The Royal Turf Club of Thailand.

The draft casino law in Thailand is aimed at boosting the country’s tourism by US$12bn.

A memorandum of understanding has already reportedly been signed with investment partners, though it is not known how big the complex will be or exactly where it will be based.

Shinawatra became prime minister after her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, was ousted after the appointment of a cabinet member who had been jailed in connection with an alleged bribery attempt.
