A bill that would increase land-based casino taxes in Mississippi, US, has moved one step closer to being brought into law.

As reported by Mississippi Today, the House Ways and Means Committee has moved forward a proposal to hike casino taxes from 12 per cent to 16 per cent.
The state's share would increase from eight per cent to 12 per cent, which Ways and Means Chairman Trey Lamar said would bring in around $50m more per year.
Mississippi Today also reported that through his bill, Lamar is looking to investigate why online sports betting bills - with the state failing to pass another such bill in the latest legislative session - fail in the Senate.
“There needs to be some further light shed on this topic … [Illegal online gambling] has reached pandemic level… It’s my understanding that a small handful of casinos are standing in the way of that legislation," he said.
Lamar's bill now advances to the full House.
