Macau’s gross gaming revenue in January amounted to MOP18.25bn (US$2.27bn), an annual drop of 5.6 per cent.
January was largely expected to see an uptick, due to the Chinese New Year holiday falling partially within the month, prompting strong visitation and expectations for increased gaming and non-gaming spend.
The January figure amounts to a 0.3 per cent rise from December’s GGR figure. It also marks the first full month of GGR results under Macau’s new leadership, which changed hands on December 20, and includes part of the Chinese New Year takings.
The CNY Golden Week period officially commenced on January 28 and runs until February 4, with an expected 5m border crossings during the period. However, typically visitation peaks in the later days of the holiday.
Macau’s primary market is mainland China.
