Lawmakers in the US state of Iowa yesterday passed a five-year moratorium on new casino licences.
Cedar Rapids will be the community most immediately impacted as the Cedar Crossing Casino had planned a $275m project, which supporters said would net the state an additional $60m in gaming revenue.
However, opponents contended that a casino in Cedar Rapids would "cannibalise revenue from existing casinos, hurting the economy in other Iowa towns."
