Dutch gaming operator Holland Casino said it finished a “financially challenging” year “better than expected,” with 2024 revenue falling 4.1 per cent year-on-year to €784m.

Revenue from land-based Holland Casino branches fell slightly from €701.7m in 2023 to €698.8m in 2024.

However, the company said an increase in visitors from 5.1 million to 5.2 million is a “sign of appreciation” for its offerings.

Revenue from the online Holland Casino brand also fell, from €116m to €85.2m.

Holland Casino said it paid €222.6m in gambling taxes in 2024 ahead of a second increase in the tax rate to 37.8 per cent from January 1, 2026.

The company urged the Dutch government to scrap the rise and said it is “incompatible” with state secretary Teun Struycken’s plans for improved responsible gambling policy.

“With a total tax burden well over 50 per cent of revenue, achieving that vision becomes unrealistic,” Holland Casino said.

CEO Petra de Ruiter added: “Looking ahead to 2025, we see that revenue in the first quarter is more or less stable thanks to the measures taken. However, with the – sometimes painful – cost-saving measures already implemented, we believe we’ve nearly reached our limits.”

Holland Casino also released 2024 figures about its interventions with players regarding responsible gaming.

It said  13,788 preventative conversations were held with land-based gaming customers, down from 14,336 in 2023, while there were 9,575 interventions and alerts at land-based branches last year, up from 9,084 in 2023.

Online, Holland Casino held 10,606 preventative conversations, down from 10,606, while the company sent 153,978 preventative pop-ups and emails, down from 308,906 in 2023.
