Fifteen people, including Craig Williams, a former aide to ex-prime minister Rishi Sunak, have been charged by the Great British Gambling Commission (GBGC) with offences related to bets placed on the timing of the UK 2024 general election.

The charges come after an investigation into alleged cheating looked at individuals suspected of using confidential information to gain an unfair advantage in betting markets.
Former Tory MP Williams and Tory candidate Laura Sanders, who is also married to the party’s campaign chief, are among those charged. Also charged is former police officer Jeremy Hunt, not to be confused with the Tory MP and former Chancellor of the Exchequer of the same name.
Russell George, the Senedd member for Montgomeryshire is also among those charged. The BBC reported that Darren Millar, the leader of the Welsh Conservatives, suspended George from the Welsh Conservative group in the Senedd. It was described as “a neutral act pending the outcome of the justice process.”
Those charged are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Friday, June 13.
