Gambling operators in the UK will be warned today that they face a potential statutory levy to fund support for problem gambling unless they boost voluntary payments by the end of the year.

Only about one in 10 of the UK’s 3,800 gambling companies are currently paying into the Responsibility in Gambling Trust, an industry-wide voluntary scheme.

Culture secretary Andy Burnham is expected to suggest that the industry could raise significantly more than the trust’s annual target of £4m.

His warning will feature in a speech to MPs on gambling policy, killing off the super-casino and giving the long-awaited go ahead for 16 new smaller casinos.
