David Thorpe is leaving his post as chairman of Arena Racing Company at the end of April as he looks towards retirement and pursuing “other interests.”

Thorpe has been in the role since April 2014, moving from his previous work as chairman of Arena Leisure.

He said now is the “right time” to step down, adding his input in the “major improvement” of creating a new industry structure offers a “significant source of pride.”

“I will continue to be a passionate supporter and advocate for the business and the sport,” Thorpe said.

Martin Cruddace, ARC chief executive, labelled Thorpe a “source of constant support, counsel and guidance.”

“David will remain a very good friend of both me and the company, and there will be a special welcome for him whenever he comes racing at our tracks,” Cruddace added.

Thorpe has also served on the boards of both the Horserace Betting Levy Board and British Horseracing Authority.
