It appears the Alberta Gaming & Liquor Commission has suspended the purchase of US gaming terminals including slots and VLTs in response to the implementation of tariffs by the US.

Other provinces are likely to follow Alberta in the decision, which could impact slot supplier sales in the near-term, Eilers & Krejcik Gaming reported.

Leased products should remain in operation and there shouldn’t be any impact on casino management system provider maintenance revenues, the report said.

Alberta purchases account for around 4,000 VLTs annually, representing four per cent of US and Canada sales, Eilers estimates.

Total sales in Canada last year were 15,000 slots, accounting for 16 per cent of total US and Canada sales.

Eilers estimates that IGT holds a 45 per cent market share of total slot and VLTS in Canada, followed by Light & Wonder with 20 per cent, Aristocrat at 18, Konami at six and AGS, Ainsworth and Everi each with a three per cent share.

The directive from Alberta is likely to remain in place until the US and Canada are able to reach a new trade agreement, Eilers said.
