The South African gambling industry - and the general public - have until November 15 to submit comments or evidence on the country’s National Gambling Amendment Bill, which will amend the regulation of gambling in South Africa and bring about greater harmony in legislation across the country’s nine provinces and the national regulator.

Countdown in South Africa

A draft bill was published at the end of September that triggered a 45-day window of opportunity for comment.

The bill proposes that the National Gambling Board should become the national gambling regulator and would be headed by a CEO, answering to the department of trade and industry. There would be increased restrictions on advertising of gambling and the seizure of winnings from unlawful online gambling.

It is also proposed to establish an inspectorate to deal with illegal gambling and work at targeting unlawful winnings. There would be closer administration of bookmaking, electronic bingo terminals and limited payout machines (AWP) operations.
