Las Vegas Sands chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson has said he is “morally opposed” to online gambling, calling the practice a “toxin”.

“It’s a train wreck, it’s a toxicity, it’s a cancer waiting to happen,” Adelson told Bloomberg Television’s Deirdre Bolton.

As the legalisation of online gambling in the US continues to gather pace, Adelson has emerged as one of its highest profile opponents.

“Younger people, people who can’t afford it, can gamble while they’re on a subway or a bus or a passenger in a car, or while they’re lying in bed in their birthday suits on their smartphone or on their iPad,” he said.

“What is the purpose of putting a casino on everybody’s kitchen table?”

In February, New Jersey became the latest state – after Nevada and Delaware – to legalise online gambling. Meanwhile, political moves to engineer a federal policy continue.
