Reports in the US claim that Jennifer Carroll, Florida’s lieutenant governor and the second highest ranking state politician behind the governor, resigned on Wednesday, March 13 – the day after she was questioned as part of an investigation into an internet cafe company that she once represented.

Governor Rick Scott's chief of staff, Adam Hollingsworth, said Carroll was interviewed by Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers on Tuesday, March 12, about her work with the Oklahoma-based Allied Veterans of the World, an organisation which operated internet cafes.

Allied Veterans is implicated in an investigation into International Internet Technologies. The owner of IIT, Chase Burns, was arrested on March 12 and stands accused of making $290m from supplying illegal gambling software in Florida and claiming the games' proceeds would benefit Allied Veterans.

While serving as a state lawmaker, Carroll's links to the Allied Veterans were also questioned when she proposed a bill that would benefit internet cafes.

Carroll's former aides have offered no immediate comment and Chase Burns, who has been granted bail, denies any wrongdoing.
