Zynga has submitted an application to the Nevada Gaming Control Board, in a push towards running real-money gambling sites in the state.

Chief revenue officer Barry Cottle said the San Francisco-based company has filed for a preliminary finding of suitability for gaming in Nevada. However, it could take more than a year for Zynga to become eligible for real-money wagering in the state, Cottle said in a statement.

The news follows the announcement in October that Zynga had signed a partnership with bwin.party to offer real-money gambling in the UK. The Nevada application is the company’s first step toward the gambling market in the US.

“As we’ve said previously, the broader US market is an opportunity that’s further out on the horizon based on legislative developments, but we are preparing for a regulated market,” added Cottle.

Zynga shares rose around three per cent to $2.32 following the announcement.
