Senator Harry Reid's poker bill has encountered opposition in the US Congress.

Senator Reid has not been successful in attaching a bill that would legalise online poker to any legislation expected to be voted on during the lame duck congressional session. Although continuing with his efforts to gain passage of the bill in the lame duck session, according to several reports this is looking more and more unlikely.

A new congress will take over on January 4, 2011 and if the poker bill is not enacted in the lame duck session, then the prospects for any internet gaming legislation at a federal level are slim in the short-term future, making it likely that each state will separately enact its own online gambling act.
