The casino industry in the US state of New Jersey recorded its first annual net gain for a decade in 2016, as a 32.1 per cent increase in online gaming revenue gave the sector a much-needed boost.

Total internet gaming win for the 12 months to December 31 was $196.7m, up $47.8m on 2015. The state casino sector as a whole recorded a total gaming win of $2.603bn in 2016, up 1.5 per cent – $39.6m – on the prior 12 months.

Online gaming from Borgata, Caesars Interactive, Golden Nugget, Resorts Digital and Tropicana all saw gains in 2016 with Golden Nugget seeing the most growth, up 36.4 per cent to $42.25m in the year.

Borgata still holds the greatest share of internet gaming win with $47m collected in 2016. The month of December actually saw Borgata drop a little, down 6.6 per cent year on year.

In contrast, Golden Nugget leapt 66.9 per cent in December, up to $4.79m in the month, while Resorts Digital, home to PokerStars’ New Jersey operations, led the way with revenues up 143.9 per cent year on year, to $3.14m for December.
